Tips On Filing Out Forms

Tip #1: Always be honest

If you are caught lying, your application will be denied.

If you are dishonest in any way, you can be fined, put on trial, removed from the U.S. and prevented from re-entering for long periods of time.

Do not try to take shortcuts – it will be impossible to change your answers in the future.

Tip #2: Answer every question

Be sure to answer every question and fill every blank when filling out forms. If the question does not apply to your situation, enter this on the form by writing 'Not Applicable', 'None' or 'Unknown', whichever is best. Do not leave any questions unanswered because your application will be returned and delayed.

Tip #3: Follow the Instructions on the form carefully

Find the areas in each form which are meant for office use only. Do not write in these areas! These areas are meant for USCIS personnel handling your case – see the illustration below.

Tip #4: Write your correct address

The USCIS will maintain contact with you by sending you letters in the mail. Make sure you are able to receive mail in a dependable manner by putting your correct address on the forms.

Most forms require your mailing address while others ask that you fill out your home address. If you would prefer to get your mail at a location other than where you live, make sure to put that address down as the mailing address. Otherwise, list your home address in both places.

Other tips

To fill out the forms, you can use a computer printer (when a fillable form is available from the USCIS website), a typewriter, or a pen (use black or dark blue ink).

If you find that you do not have enough room for your answer on the form, you may add a sheet of paper with the full answer. Be sure to note on the form that your answer is continued on an additional sheet of paper attached to the form. Label the extra sheet of paper with the corresponding item number and be sure to sign it as well.

Do not send original documents unless you are specifically asked to do so. Originals will not be returned to you and will become a part of your file
